The New York City Department of Education released the 2026-27 public school calendar, with classes scheduled to begin on Sept. 10, later than the previous school year. The later start gives students and teachers more time to enjoy their summer.
Parents and teachers have been awaiting for next year’s school calendar, which the NYCDE released on April 21. The first day of school starts on Monday, Sept. 10, much later than usual. This year, for example, students started school on Sept. 4.
Sabrina Alkayfee, a chemistry teacher, is concerned about how the spring calendar affects students and the school year. With al the days off in the spring, she said, “It’s going to be really hard for students to stay focused.”
This is true especially for seniors. “Senioritis will cause students’ grades to drop and will cause more procrastination,” she siad.
