Alfa Aquino, a beloved Spanish teacher at Bronx River High School, died on June 9 at age 46 after a fierce battle with cancer. Despite her condition, Ms. Aquino found beauty in every breath and reminded colleagues and students about how precious life can be.
Ms. Aquino didn’t allow her condition to define her. She explored dozens of interests and was known for those that made her the happiest, such as traveling, dancing and listening to music. She visited more than 60 countries and incorporated her culture into every lesson.
She founded the Hispanic Culture Club with Jemny Santana, the 11th grade guidance counselor. Creating traditional dishes, playing Spanish music and dancing with the club members, Aquino preserved the environments she loved and missed the most.
From Hunter College to Mercy University to Touro College, Ms. Aquino obtained two master’s degrees before she came to Bronx River High School three years ago. In both teaching and learning, her resolve proved her to be the most capable person in every room.
Jennifer Lippold, a teacher and a close friend of Aquino’s, said she never gave up throughout everything, “She had more strength in her pinky than most people do in their entire lives,’’ she said.
“Where most people would have given up, she continued to fight,” she said. “Even until her last breath, cancer was never going to beat her spirit.”

Ms. Aquino was someone who faced every challenge with grace, and showered love onto everyone she could. “She exemplified what it meant to truly love what you do,” Ms. Lippold said. “Her students were her children; she poured all that love into her advisory girls.”
“‘My lovelies,’ ‘Mis amores,’ she would always call all her students that.”
Ms. Aquino believed that everyone had to take care of their body and continue to nourish it. Ms. Lippold quoted her, “You don’t know when your body no longer provides you strength, so don’t take it for granted. You travel, live and experience all through your body.”
“She is the strongest woman I know,’’ Ms. Lippold said. “ You see what cancer can do to a person, but you see her fight anyway, and she still lived like she believed everyone should: without taking any day for granted.”

She was the strongest person alive that I have ever met! Loved God and always gave Him thanks for another day. NEVER had a bad attitude, NEVER once treated anyone ill mannered. ALWAYS saw the beautiful in everything and everyone. Loved to travel and did so VERY often. Her life was FULL of love and laughter amidst the pain& suffering. In this world right now there are ppl who are MISERABLE and treat others really bad and unfair, ppl that are not sick and take life for granted. Sometimes life is unfair. But she is now in heaven. No more pain. THANK YOU God for the time you gave us with her. We love you Alfa and will always celebrate your life!!!

May you rest well, Ms. Aquino… I will never forget you, and no one else will… May you be remembered alongside Mr. O, who died prior to me enrolling her, and any other Bronx River teacher, student, and/or staff member who died too soon… I hope you can make great friends with Frida Kahlo…
