The BRHS Esports team competed against schools from the New York metro area in the spring Garden State Esports tournament at Georgian Court University in New Jersey on May 16. Joseph Bruno, Neisten Garcia, Daniel Escano and Jeury Mota represented the school.
Rocket League is a popular, free-to-play vehicular soccer video game developed and published by Psyonix with the rights being sold to Epic Games in May 2019 and subsequently transitioned the game to a free-to-play model in 2020. Rocket League is often described as soccer with cars. It challenges players to control rocket-powered vehicles using their knowledge and thinking of when and where it hit the ball and work together to hit a giant ball into their opponent’s goal.
Monique Paes, the coach of the Esports team, is ecstatic to have another opportunity to have one of her team take part in the semi-finals, “It was great,” she said. “We had one mom drive the students to the event. She was highly impressed and she didn’t think gaming was such a big thing, with the many different career opportunities being displayed. With some of the players given opportunities to get a scholarship.”
Isa Meredith a senior enjoyed the day but wish the team had won. “I was really upset that team lost,” Isa said. ” I really thought the team would’ve won, although the whole tournament thing was interesting.”
