The class of 2026 walked the stage marking their official graduation on June 26. Parents and staff filled the auditorium with supporting cheers as the seniors grabbed their diplomas and tossed their caps. The graduating class made their mark at Bronx River and are starting a new chapter.
Tatianna Amparo, the older sister of a graduate, says she was so proud to watch her sister walk the stage. “We’ve been through a lot of things together over the years; now she’s even got a full ride to college.”
“If you don’t make friends in your first year of college that’s OK, everyone is to themselves at first,” she says. “Your first semester will be hard, but you’ll breeze through the second one.”
Gabriella Amparo, another one of the graduate’s sisters, feels the moment is bittersweet and is nervous about the change. “I’ve been going to school with Jomayra (Amparo) and Austin (Zhu) for three years. I don’t like change but I’m very proud of them because a lot of people don’t get to finish high school.”
The valedictorian, Myess Hammouri, and the salutatorian, Lathania Williams, gave emotion-filled speeches dedicated to teachers and fellow students. Both speeches reflected on the past four years and noted personal hardships faced throughout high school.
During the ceremony, awards and scholarships were given to both parents and seniors. Principal Gregory Fucheck, who is retiring this year, presented the CSA Parent Leadership award to Bibi Ali and Felicia Garcia, two parents who have been involved in the school community.
The AFSA Principal’s Leadership award was given to Freda Sarpong, and Taquir Shuel received the Blanche Schwartz award. The “Triple C” award was presented to MD Ferdous and Ann-Kiara Bourdeau.
Jomayra Amparo, Marie Coatl-Camacho, Mitila Purba, David Gregarek, Tahmina Marjan, Freda Sarpong and Britana Owen won the New York City Comptroller Achievement award. Student Council scholarships were given to Nyimma Bayor and Kelsey Yeboah.
Lathania and Myess received the Mark Levine NYS Comptroller award for their academic excellence. The Exceptional Attendance award was given to Marie Coatl-Camacho, and the Newspaper award was given to MD Ferdous.
The CSA Student Leadership Award was given to Naomi Oyenuga, and the Commemoration Commission Semiquincentennial Citizenship award went to Keisy Cuello. Mitila Purba was awarded the Entrepreneurship Club scholarship for her long-term involvement.
The Attorney General Civic Ambassador award was given to Justin Arias for passion in civics and government, while Ryan J. Walsh scholarships in U.S. History and Government were awarded to David Gregarek for $500, and Myess for $5,000.
