About four months have passed since the Lehman Campus received a game-changing opportunity to redo the athletic field so it will be big enough for regulation football games. Thanks to the $5.6 million grant, the Lehman campus now has the funds to redo the field and also improve athletic facilities.
In the past, promised corrections to the field never happened. But this time could prove different.
Revising a project like a high school football field requires the correct planning, especially to make sure that the structure is suitable and that it does not affect the environment or property around it. That means that plans created by engineers need to be approved through multiple different levels, including the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. This phase of the renovation process is still ongoing for the foreseeable future, at least until the start of the new school year.
Athletic Director Jason Maas, who is helping oversee the project, has high hopes for the field, but understands that this project could take some time to get off the ground.
βThe renovations have definitely been moving forward, but it’ll take awhile before people start noticing,ββ he said. “There’s a lot that goes into building something and right now, we are making sure that we can create a space that’s perfect for our students to work, train and play on.β
So plans for the football field are moving forward albeit at a slower pace than perhaps the fans had hoped. The goal remains the same: When construction is complete, students will finally be able to enjoy a football game on their own football field.
