Destiny Soriano, a 10th grader, won an award for being the best negotiator for her committee while representing Bronx River at a mock U.N conference in February.
The win surprised Destiny. “It was my first time and I didn’t expect to win anything,’’ she said.
She found the experience intimidating because many competitors had more experience.
“I had no experience and no idea how it was supposed to be,’’ she said. “ I most definitely plan to compete next year.”
Five other Bronx River students – Lily Lopez, Ariana Gonzalez, Oliver Rivera, Matthew Hardy and Layla Batista – also participated, representing Belize in mock conferences at the United Nations building.
The debate team stayed at the Hyatt hotel with the conference being at the Marriott. “I think they were more mature and able to work on their feet because in class they had an answer but they were able to handle themselves,” said Daniel Butler, the debate coach.
The experience allowed students to debate with other people. “I think it is good for students because they were able to get out of their shells and talk to others,” he said.
