Briana Colon, a junior athlete, initially joined lacrosse because she saw a poster that intrigued her. She shares her thoughts on the sport below.
Q: How long have you been playing?
A: I have been playing lacrosse for two years now, and I first started playing as a sophomore.
Q: What inspired you to play this sport?
A: Me and Daniella (Padagas) saw a poster and we wanted to try the sport out because it caught our eyes.
Q: What is your position on the team?
A: I play both defense and mid fielder.
Q: What is the best part about playing this sport?
A: The best part about playing lacrosse is I get to play with Daniella as well, we get to spend more time together, and we both have good chemistry.
Q: What is the most challenging part about participating in the sport?
A: The most challenging would be getting back up after we lose a game as well as because we need the power and resilience to get back up.
Q: Describe what a typical meet or game is like?
A: We have to pay attention and you have to pace yourself so that you don’t get tired or get hurt.
Q: What was your team record last year?
A: Well our score was 0-12 but on the flip side I accomplished my first goal so far and I would like to score some more next game.
Q: How do you feel like the season is going so far?
A: There are many more girls playing and it’s fun because I like to socialize with new people. On the other hand the weather can be challenging sometimes.
Q: How have you improved from last year?
A: I have improved with my throwing and catchings as well as my shots.
Q: What advice do you have for others who want to participate in this sport?
A: When it comes to lacrosse, it’s never easy at first. You have to be really passionate about the sport. Also remember when you get down, always get back up.
Q: What are you and your team’s goals for the season? Explain.
A: Our goals are all the same, to win a game for our two-year losing streak. That’s why we are trying to win.
Q: Do you play any other sports? If so, what are they? Which is your favorite? Why?
A: I play both volleyball and lacrosse. I used to do boxing but I stopped playing but I want to go back. I did boxing because boxing is mainly a male-dominated field sport and as a female I felt like a baddie and it was good to fight.
Q: When you graduate from high school, do you plan to continue playing any sports? Explain.
A: After I graduate I plan to play both volleyball and lacrosse. I would also like to try swimming since I’m a big fan. I love physical activity and building my social skills.
