After several years of being inactive, the National Honor Society is back at BRHS with science teacher Charley S. Ruperto as the advisor. The members learned of their selection at the school’s awards dinner on March 5.
The new members, who will be officially induced later this spring, are Sadia Ahammad, Fatema Arpa, Layla Batista, Annkiara Bourdeau, Anthony Bruno, Salman Chowdhury, Marie Coatl-Camacho, Briana Colon, Tegan Connolly, Keisy Cuello, Nicole Disla, Sumeja Halili, Myess Hammouri, Deborah Kabore, Emely Navarro, Britana Owen, Naomi Oyengua, Daniella Padagas, Sanjay Persaud, Diosbeni Rojas, Freda Sarpong, Lathania Williams, Jordon Wilson, Roua-Ibrahim Yabai and Justin Zhu.
Britana Owen appreciates the honor. “Because there was such a limited number of people that were able to get in, I feel like a leader,’’ she said. “I feel seen and chosen,” she added.
Despite showing appreciation, Britana doesn’t entirely feel like her hard work has paid off, calling back on all the times of “trying to finish assignments and projects that only had a short amount of time to get done,” being grateful but left needing more to be satisfied.
Mr. Ruperto has been putting in effort to make sure the NHS is back and running for current and future students. He emphasizes the love he’s gotten from students. “They showed a serious interest and passion,’’ he said. I was honored they thought of me and wanted me to do it. They really didn’t see this as just an opportunity just for a scholarship. A lot of them saw it as an opportunity to grow, do community service, and think and work outside of themselves.”
