Emalee Charles, the student council president, has been named to the Chancellor’s Student Advisory Council, a committee made up of five students and two alternates from each borough. The group, which focuses on educational issues, meets at Tweed Court House in Manhattan or online via zoom throughout the school year.
Emalee, a junior, hopes to help make schools more interconnected between staff and students. “I know how important it is for students to feel safe and comfortable and showing that the teachers care and are there for more than just the money,’’ she said.
Emalee says she has personally felt the impact of having a school where the teachers and students are more connected, which led to better results in her classes.
Principal Gregory Fucheck looks forward to Emalee’s work: He believes that when students are more involved with decisions, it can lead to better changes for the school.
Starr Giscombe, the assistant principal, has nothing but high expectations for Emalee. “If Emalee had any questions about her tasks, I’d help her go over it,” she said, “It feels great knowing that a student will make a difference in the community.’’
Ms. Giscombe hopes Emalee stays true to herself and never stops moving forward.
