Sept, 29, 2019. That’s the last time the Lehman Lions girls varsity soccer team won a game. But that six-year-drought hasn’t kept this group of spirited girls from playing competitively. The Lehman Lions secured a 2-2 tie on Oct. 7 at home against KIPP NYC College Prep. And even though the season has ended, the returning members are looking forward to next fall.
Staying positive, no matter the score helps. The team always says positive things to boost the players’ confidence and have hope in each other, Paula Benito, a mid-fielder, said. The team also says chants to inspire each other on and off the field.
Even though the team didn’t secure a victory this year, Paula, a 10th grader, is happy she’s on the team. “I wanted to do something fun,’’ she said.
Jayleen Godinez, a junior and a forward on the team, decided to play soccer for the fun of it. “ I just wanted to do a sport,’’ she said.
Jayleen says practice helps the team stay motivated. “We get better at every practice,” she said.
Coach Janelle Marxhausen admires the girls’ sportsmanship and determination to improve.
“There are a number of girls who just started playing,’’ she said. Over the course of the season, she saw the team improve, getting more first touches, improving passing accuracy and boosting stamina.
“Everyone wanted the best,’’ she said.
