Teams prepare for basketball tournament

The annual basketball tournament at Bronx River High School will be held in memory of David Ollivierre, also referred to as Mr. O, a cherished teacher who passed away two years ago. The first round of the tournament will be on March 25 when the 9th graders battle the 10th graders and the 11th graders take on the 12 graders. The winners of those two games will advance to the final round on March 28..

Teachers Marco Pompa and Daniel Herguth are coaching the freshmen. “ I feel pretty good about my team,’’ said Mr. Pompa.

Students on the 9th grade team are Aaron Rodriguez , Albaraa Sharhan , Diosbeni Rojas, Dylan Clementi, Jayson Martinez , Jonathan Torres, Johntae Velez, Juan Tirado, Karnpreet Singh, Ronlado Andino, Elias Rodriguez, Nicholas Gonzalez. David Arevalo is the team manager.

Staff members Takia Gaynor and Anthony Ruiz are coaching the Sophomores. “I feel confident, but I’m scared about the seniors,’’ Ms. Gaynor said. “ But, my team is pretty good, really confident.’’

The sophomore players are Adam Lococo, Austin Zhu, Carmelo Reel, Jamal Quinones, Juery Mota, Justin Arias, Kassim Sanogo, Mustapha Drammeh and Victor Huertas.

The Juniors are coached by Joseph Shinn and Rich Himed. “I feel good,’’ said a confident Mr. Shinn. “We’re going to win. Win it all.”

The junior players are Adama Sibide, Adrian Morel, Allan Gomez, Angel Mota Rodriguez, Damion Kelly Jr., Jayden Issac Perez, Jhonluis Feliz, Joel Aguliar, Kevin Carvente, Mateo Lasso Valdez and Ruben Santiago. Karte Fowler is the team manager.

Elijah Lopez and Abraham Zungia are coaching the seniors, who won the tournament last year as juniors. ” I feel my team is good,” said Mr. Zuniga. “The only thing I’m concerned about is my top three players that might not be able to play because of their attendance.”

The seniors players are Carlos Cruz, Chris Banks, Eleoniad Rameriz, Isaiah Jenkins, Issaka Kabore, Jacob Figueroa, Jerome Norman, Keishaun Bowers, Mouloukou Fadiga, Qualik Paniagua, Rinaldo Castillio and Will Lappe.
