To start off spring, the Spanish Culture Club is hoping to diversify the school and help people express themselves through their cultural assets. Club advisors Alfa Aquino and Jemny Santana aim to use the April town hall as an outlet for culture expression.
“We aim to promote Hispanic cultural awareness amongst our school community,” Ms. Aquino said. “For the April town hall we want students to dress in costumes that represent their culture and do a cultural dance.”
The Spanish Culture Club, which meets meets every Wednesday after school, helps students experience a variety of cultures through homemade snack, dance lessons and other activities.
Ms. Santana, the 11th grade counselor, says the club helps everyone who participates. “It gives them social skills, to be more open, culturally aware and more able to accept themselves,’’ she said.
The club also is about sharing: “Embrace culture, share culture experiences for mostly Latin America,” Ms. Santana said.
“I like the club because it’s very good and students that want to interact with different cultures or reconnect with their culture can do so,” Keisy Cuello, a senior, said.
“It can be something for students with Hispanic descendants but that don’t really experience their culture so the club is an opportunity to experience your culture and express yourself there,” she said.
Alfa Aquino, the Spanish teacher, says, people should join because members do different activities like cooking, singing or karaoke and dancing
