Charlie Ruperto, a science teacher, oversees a LEGO club on Wednesdays in room 432 after school. Not everyone has access to LEGO bricks, but this club gives students a chance connect and create with these toys. Knowing the passion the students have for LEGO bricks, Mr. Ruperto decided to turn that passion into a club where they could work together to create LEGO structures.
Q: What made you start this club?
A: Last year a few of my students had approached me and told me about it and now we’re here. I actually found out it was a popular thing in other schools.
Q: Do you personally have a passion for LEGO toys? If so, how did it start?
A: I grew up with LEGOs but it was never to the point of obsession that it is to some of these kids. What we’re doing right now is big even for me. I mostly had hand-me downs.
Q: How do you think this club could improve the community of Bronx River?

A: It’s something for all grades, we have freshmen, juniors, everybody. It allows them to make connections. It also allows hands-on experience and even STEM learning.
Q: How will you encourage others to join?
A: Word of mouth, it’s not set in stone but we’re considering doing a movie night, other events to draw interest, possibly showcasing some builds, and maybe a few bake sales.
Q: Are you the only administrator of this club?
A: Ms. Jack provides insight and gives input and advice on how to do things since she ran her own club last year, but I’m pretty much the only administrator.
