As the school year shifts into late November, seniors are scrambling to get their college applications and essays together. And to make these efforts worthwhile, they also are researching and choosing colleges that suit their plans for the future.
Aye Bah, the new college advisor at BRHS, has been visiting senior classes to keep all seniors informed on the college process and important documents.
“I support them by helping them determine their plans after high school by evaluating colleges, trade schools, applications and financial aid options,” said Ms. Bah. “I connect them with resources that lead to their success.’’
Ms. Bah is typically available all day, even during fourth period in room 448. She keeps students on track through deadlines, reminders and holding them accountable to their word. She encourages any senior who needs support with colleges, trade schools or any other post-secondary decisions to seek her.
Ann-Kiara Bourdeau, a senior, finds the college process to be stressful. “I think that senior year is stressful because of the essays and applications. Sometimes I feel like I’m on my own because teachers are so busy helping all the other students,” she said. “When I need support, I go to Mr. Butler or Ms. Bah. For example, I ask them for help with editing my college essays that I wrote last year, and sometimes I have my friends read them and give me feedback.’’
Britana Owen, another senior, is anxious about all the steps. “It’s definitely stressful because I didn’t expect to have to do this much. Preparation that I did last year is helpful and I usually go to Mr. Butler because he’s an English teacher that can edit my work,” she said. “I feel confident in this process because of all the different opportunities for other career choices and pathways I can choose.’’
Daniel Butler, the 12th grade English teacher, encourages students to stay on their toes when it comes to the college steps. “The process is overwhelming, but at BRHS, students have a lot of support if they seek it,’’ he said. “Students need to keep up with classwork and prioritize the college process in their own time. This will allow them to be prepared for the next steps.’’
