Sara Singh and Jocellyn Velez participated in a Journalism Bootcamp this summer.

Bronx River started a student newspaper last December.  And in less than a year, the newspaper has become an emerging force in high school journalism in New York City.

During the summer, editors Sara Singh and Jocellyn Velez attended a Journalism Bootcamp in Manhattan. Sponsored by Press Pass NYC, the program helps high school journalists develop newspaper and leadership skills. Both girls are also are part  of the NYC Student Press Pass Fellowship program.

With the help of a JEA/NSPA First-time Convention Grant and support from Press Pass NYC, the newspaper also will be sending two student editors and an advisor to a national journalism conference in St. Louis from Nov. 11 to 13. Editors Jocelyn and Elvia Serrano will attend along with their advisor, Deborah Porterfield. When they return, they’ll share what they learned with high school journalists in the NYC metro area, and of course, the staff of the Bronx River News.
