Time to get your sweet tooth ready: The Student Council will host a bake sale on Wednesday, Oct. 22, during lunch. The funds will help pay to send three student journalists to Nashville to participate in a national journalism conference this fall. The homemade goodies include cookies, brownies, rice-crispie treats and more.
Three newspaper staff members: MD Ferdous, managing editor; Jomayra Amparo, columnist; and Zoe Reyes, arts editor, will attend workshops on photography, news writing and editing during the national conference Nov. 13 to 16.
The fall conference, which attracts high school journalists and advisors from across the country, will also feature an awards ceremony where principal Greg Fucheck will receive the JEA Administrator of the Year Award.
The students received scholarships from JEA to cover their registration costs. Press Pass NYC, a non-profit that supports scholastic journalism in New York City, also is helping pay the costs for Bronx River and two other NYC schools to attend the conference.
“I’m very excited for the trip,’’ said Zoe, a junior who plans to continue working for the newspaper her senior year.
