Eight students got the chance to go to a workshop at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre this spring. During the workshop provided by Manhattan Theatre Club on April 26, the students created scripts based on songs written by the late Stephen Sondheim. These student-made scripts were then acted out by professional actors. Diosbeni Rojas, a sophomore, got the chance to see a script he developed acted out by a pro and also got to act it out with the pros. “It was a fun experience because since I was a kid I wanted to do acting and it gave me some experience,’’ he said.
Myess Hammouri, a junior, enjoyed the experience. “Honestly it felt really cool because I’ve never seen anything like it before and I know I couldn’t have replicated it in the same way,’’ she said. “Also, it was intriguing to see our work come to life.”
After the workshop, the students saw the Broadway show called “Old Friends,” which was a tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim starring Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga. Many of the people in the audience cried when the play included tributes to his many talents.
For any aspiring students who want to be actors in the future, Nayib Felix, an actor who has been in projects like “Jessica Jones” has a piece of advice for you: “Don’t make art your life; make life your art.”
