This is the first in a series about the staff who keep our school running.
Have you ever wondered what keeps a school running smoothly beyond the classroom walls? Behind every well-organized school day is a team of staff members who often go unnoticed, working tirelessly to maintain order and function. While teachers lead lessons, others ensure that everything else runs seamlessly, creating an environment where students can thrive. Their work, though rarely in the spotlight, is the quiet force that keeps the school going. They may not always be recognized, but they are truly the backbone of our school, holding everything together so learning can happen without disruption.
Since 2014, Shahina Chowdhury has been quietly serving the school community as one of its most dedicated staff members. With over a decade of experience, she began her journey at Lehman High School before joining Bronx River High School. As a lunch lady, Chowdhury plays a crucial role in making sure students are fed and ready to face their day. She chose this job because she loves working with kids and is passionate about feeding those in need. “My goal is to feed hungry people, and I feel good doing it,” she shared. That sense of fulfillment is what keeps her coming back each day.
Of course, not every day is easy. When a recent water issue disrupted kitchen operations, Chowdhury and her team had to travel to another school just to prepare meals. Still, she stayed focused. “Sometimes we face challenges, but I just focus on doing my part,” she said. Many students don’t realize the behind-the-scenes work involved, especially during fasting periods or when they ask for seconds. “We’re not really supposed to give more,” Chowdhury explained. “But I feel bad sometimes. The kids are nice, and I’ve gotten used to it.” Her quiet resilience and care help keep the school running smoothly, even in tough situations.
When lunch is over, cleanup begins again, making sure everything is in order for the next day. That’s when the next shift of unseen work begins and another key figure steps in, someone whose story is still unfolding.
