Members of the Gay-Straight Alliance club hosted a tea party afterschool on March 11. After a long afternoon of eating and watching “The Princess Diaries,” the club members realized they had too much food and not enough members, and provided the rest of their food to homeless people around the area.
GSA club advisor Sabrina Alkayfee hosted the event, but could not attend due to an emergency. Earth and Space teacher, Anna-Maria Jack, took over as temporary host in the meantime, and adapted to the sudden changes in plan quickly.

Deborah Kabore, a member of the GSA club, said that after the tea party, she and a few others decided to give away the leftover food to homeless people in need of the food. “Hawaou (Kobeogo), Emalee (Charles), Trelson (Peacock) and I decided to hand the food out,” said Deborah. “We walked all the way down to McDonalds and took a lap around the block. We didn’t really see anybody, so we walked further, then we saw a couple of people to give the food out to.”
She continued, “They were so grateful, I saw their smiles and it made me feel better. I felt so special being able to help someone like that.”
“At the end of the day it was a team effort. Emalee was the one talking, Hawaou came up with the idea. I agreed because I thought it was a great idea.”
Emalee Charles, a 10th grader, believes GSA club is centered around helping others. “Before joining, one thing that upset me was all the discrimination and injustice ‘it hones in on the LGBTQIA+ community and I felt like that’s one of the smaller communities you don’t see get represented in schools specifically. So I realized, there’s a club for that, why not join and see what it’s about so I can help?”
“It’s important for students to have clubs like GSA because everyone deserves representation no matter your ethnicity, sexuality or interests.”
