A fight on the first floor between students from different schools led to a campus-wide hold and then esclalated to a soft lockdown on Feb. 26. Students in all six schools on the Lehman campus had to stay in their classrooms about an hour during fifth and sixth periods.
A hold is when students are not allowed inside or outside the classrooms, but classes continue as normal until the building announces, “The hold has been lifted.” During a soft lockdown, students and staff must lock their doors, remain quiet and stay out of sight.
Since multiple schools were involved, according to Jason Maass who is in charge of school safety, all six schools on the campus were put on hold.
Maass said that even though a fight could be located on the fourth floor or the first floor, the school needs minimize whatever the situation may be, in this case, a fight. The NYPD (New York police department) or the GRP (General Response Program) will come to the school and do a further investigation. If the situation escalates, then that’s when the entire building has to go to a soft lockdown.
Joseph Shinn, a dean, explained the situation. “There was a big fight downstairs on the first floor; it was multiple schools. They were looking for someone involved in the fight but couldn’t find them because other schools opened their doors,’’ he said.
Freshman Jaroly Guzman says that she was worried since students were kind of loud. Other students also reported that some students were noisy, breaking one of the rules of a soft lockdown, which is to stay quiet at all times
