When BRHS students visited Binghamton University in February, we got to hear about life on campus from one of our own: Alexty Perez, a former BRHS student. Alexty, who graduated in 2022, planned and led the college tour.
Visiting the campus with someone who went to our school and now attends Binghamton made the college experience feel real. It wasn’t just about seeing the campus; it was about hearing from someone who had been in my position just a couple of years ago. Alexty and the other guides talked about the challenges of adjusting to college, managing time and finding a support system, which made me reflect on my future.
Hearing about these experiences made me feel more confident about college. They reassured me that feeling overwhelmed at first is normal. Understanding that someone from my school is thriving gave me hope that I could do the same. Getting to see how living in the dorms has helped them connect with new people. The shared lounges and study spaces made it easy to meet others, and having a community made the transition smoother. They also mentioned that taking summer classes before their first full semester helped them adjust faster, giving them a head start on academics and campus life.
One of the biggest takeaways from this trip was how important it is to have a clear idea of what you want to major in and what you want to do with your life. The guides made it clear that choosing a major isn’t just a box to check during application, but a way to shape your entire college experience and future career. Wasting time on a major that doesn’t truly interest you or fit your goals can lead to frustration and setbacks. Changing paths later is possible, but it can cost extra time, money, and energy. That’s why figuring out your passion early and researching different career options is crucial.
They also talked a lot about the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), which provides academic and financial support to students who don’t meet traditional admission requirements. Even though I don’t qualify, I can see how helpful it is for students who need extra support to succeed.
This visit made me realize that college isn’t just about getting in; it’s about making smart choices while you’re there. Gaining insights from former Bronx River students successfully navigating Binghamton University made the future feel surreal, but it also reminded me that planning ahead is just as important as getting accepted.
