Bronx River High School hosted its annual mid-winter break celebration, which included an assembly and a pickleball game tournament on Feb. 14. The day began with the school’s traditional Town Hall, which featured performances, awards and games.
Teachers presented the LOGIC awards, celebrating students’ efforts and traits such as Love of Learning, Mr. O’s Optimism, Grit, Intellectual Curiosity, and Caring. The Love of Learning award went to Odell Lowery, Yerlin Taveras, Aliyah Ali, and Sindid Mahmud. Mr. O’s Optimism’s award honored Vanita Jagernauth, Sammy Alqublani, Olivia Waker and Justin Diaz.
Subsequently, Myasia Hicks, Jaylen Guttierez, Sarah Alhajaji and Xiomara Cardenas received the Grit award. As for Intellectual Curiosity, Sanjay Persaud, Salman Chowdhury, Lathania Williams and Ulfat Chowdhurry were commended. Finally, teachers selected Miracle Davis, Sumeja Halili, Sameer Rahaman and Kevin Carvente to receive the Caring award, acknowledging their exceptional kindness and empathy.
A series of performances took place following the LOGIC awards. Diosbeni Rojas set the tone by singing ‘Cancer’ by My Chemical Romance. The Hispanic Culture Club then captivated the audience with a vibrant Bomba performance known as Fuego Fuego and Bucana. Shortly after, Jahayme Lamar, a senior, took the stage, dancing to a popular KPOP song. The Lehman Step Team followed with a dynamic step dance. Finally, Gabriel Joseph concluded the performances with an original rap.
To add to the town hall vibe, the Student Council arranged an “Are you smarter than a teacher?” game between teachers and students. And guess what? The students won.
After the performances, the event continued with the presentation of attendance rewards, celebrating students’ commitment to school. Students on the Honor Roll were acknowledged for their exceptional hard work and dedication.
As the second and third period came to an end, assistant Principal Tene Kelly presented a slideshow video, highlighting memories from the past months. Following the slideshow, students were dismissed for lunch in the cafeteria.
Later in the afternoon, students went downstairs to the gym to watch students and teachers compete in pickleball. Team Tene Kelly and Leonardo Burgos won first place.
At the end of the match, students were dismissed for the start of the winter break. School will resume on Feb. 24.
