Bronx River High School hosted its annual winter celebration with advisory potlucks, soccer matches and a Town Hall assembly.
The day began with the school’s traditional Town Hall, which featured performances, awards and games.
Teachers presented students with LOGIC awards, recognizing traits such as Love of Learning, Mr. O’s Optimism, Grit, Intellectual Curiosity and Caring. Nahray Drayton, Emalee Charles, David Gregarek, and Nada Isa received the Love of Learning awards. Alanna Clarke, Mahroosh Rubani, Freda Sarpong, and Aziz Dumbuya earned Mr. O’s Optimism awards. Destiny Soriano, Sazzadul Chowdhury, Adam Lococo, and Mia Cordova received Grit awards. Layla Batista, Salman Chowdhury, Myess Hammouri, and Blair Misir were awarded the Intellectual Curiosity awards. Finally, Nickolas Fernandez, Priya Mohammed, Joshua Graham, and Fahima Akter earned the Caring awards.
During the assembly, Jahayme Lamar, a senior, danced to the K-pop song “Supernatural” by NewJeans. Jamal Quinones, a junior, sang the song, “Skyfall” by Adele Laurie Blue Adkins. Gabriel Joseph, also a junior, rapped to his own song. Freshman Aryana Segarra also performed.
Mahroosh Rubani, a sophomore, said, “It went very well and was exciting to see the students and the staff go against each other. The dancing and music were nice, and overall it was a good experience.”
Assistant Principal Tene Kelly presented slideshows and videos from the year 2024, highlighting countless memories.
After lunch and a brief advisory meeting, students watched students and staff compete in soccer matches in the gymnasium. Students competed against each other with an alliance of freshman and sophomore against juniors and seniors. After a short game, the juniors and seniors won the student game 2 to 1 . After that the student vs. staff soccer game was held and as the teachers struggled to score a goal, the students won the game with one goal from Oscar Alba Meza.
Finally, students were dismissed one period early, leaving the school under the beautiful sight of snow as they hugged their friends goodbye until the new year.
