BuildOn aims to provide students with an enjoyable way to engage in community service.
“BuildOn is an excellent platform for students who want to not only better themselves but the world around them,” says Rafith Monnan, who oversees the progam at BRHS. Students in BuildOn strengthen community bonds, form relationships with people from different backgrounds and gain valuable experiences, he said.
Mr. Monnan believes BuildOn at Bronx River is making service education more exciting. The program, which runs after school and on weekends, keeps students engaged and ensures they make a positive impact through hands-on activities.
BuildOn shows its commitment to the community through interactive activities that are also designed to be fun. Bronx River students who joined BuildOn visited the Sustainable Fashion Community Center, where they sorted clothes and got to thrift.
“Vanity matters and we love to feel good about ourselves,” says Mr. Monnan.
They also participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, all dressed in pink. Locally, they contributed to the Basketball Club at BRHS by washing jerseys, handing out water and taking photos.
“We go to Kips Bay twice a week and help guide younger students, he said. “We tutor them and engage in activities that promote arts and fitness.”
Belinda Edwards, a junior who has participated in the activities, said, “I feel very connected with the community, and it helps me realize other people’s struggles.” Myess Hammouri added, “I definitely feel more connected because I’m visiting places I’ve never been to and it’s been very fun for me. I look forward to more BuildOn trips.”
