Enough with the inserts. Students who take mass transit to school now have access to the OMNY cards, the latest and easiest way to take public transportation.
In previous years, the NYC Department of Education handed out metro cards that needed to be scanned and had to be replaced every five months. With the new OMNY cards, students just tap and go.
The new cards have other benefits: They can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week; include four free bus rides each day; and last an entire year, including weekends. Under the old system, the Metro card only gave students three rides a day and couldn’t be used on weekends.
Students have mixed views on the change. “I miss the Metro Card because it was laminated,” said Vidonia Thompson, a junior at Bronx River. “With the Metro Cards, you couldn’t use it on the weekends.”
Mia Reyes, a sophomore, likes the material on the OMNY card because it bends easily and senior Alexis Santos likes the OMNY card because it provides more travel options.
Since the OMNY cards are so useful, some New York City students have tried selling them for $50 to $100. Some students have reportedly sold their cards, then asked for replacement cards because their cards “were lost.” But that can cause problems for both the buyer and seller.
Belizza Delacruz, the pupil accounting secretary who oversees the school’s distribution of the cards, warned against OMNY card re-purchases. “On the bottom of every OMNY card there’s a serial number. The old card will be deactivated.” she said. “ The MTA is locking down on people. You can get arrested or get a fine. The police charge a fine of 200 to 250 dollars.”

This card should be available to all students.
All students need access on the week end and after school for extra curricular activities.
There is discrimination against district 75 children.
Yes they have bus service however only back and forth to school.
No assistance for after school programs or activities.
Don’t our district 75 children deserve the same opportunities to experience cultural activities on the weekends?
Please help shine a light on the discriminatory policies in the distribution of student omny cards.
All students need to be treated equally and afforded the same opportunity to thrive.
