The school’s new uniform policy changed what juniors and seniors can wear this year. The popular light blue button-down shirt, which was often worn unbuttoned, has been replaced by a black crewneck.
Originally students who wore the blue shirt had to button it. In the past several years, some students stopped buttoning their shirts.
“Many students have been wearing the blue button-up shirt inappropriately, particularly female students,’’ said Starr Giscombe, an assistant principal.
She noted that most students wore the uniform as a blazer instead of a button-up, and the changes were intended to maintain a respectful environment.
Janeidy Beltre, a senior, wore the button-up uniform over her tops and crop tops without buttoning it up last year.
This look, while popular with many students, led to this uniform being taken away.
“I like the crewnecks, but they are not as cute as the blue shirt,’’ Janeidy said.
If she had to choose between one of these uniforms, she would prefer the button-up but still wouldn’t want to button it.
Rejwana Islam Soroni says the change is understandable considering how many students wore the blue shirt improperly.
Designed by former students, the new sweatshirt costs $25.
Some students have complained that the uniform is a little more expensive than it should be. However, Ms. Giscombe said, “It’s the perfect price for the uniform as it’s a bit more pricey to order crewnecks than the other uniforms’’ and she believes people buy sweatshirts at the same price or even higher in stores like H&M and Forever21.
Ms. Giscombe thinks uniforms worn appropriately create a good environment for the school. “Uniforms create a sense of belonging and builds a positive community at BRHS,” she said.
