Like the rest of the New York area, Lehman Campus felt the earth shake on Friday, April 5. The 4.8 magnitude earthquake, which originated in New Jersey, shook buildings throughout the New York City area and beyond.
“I was sitting at my desk helping two students with their presentations and asked one of my students to look out the window,’’ said Shivanie Ramnarine, the 12th-grade government teacher. “I asked if everyone was OK and was told that we did get an earthquake.’’
The fact that the solar eclipse was scheduled to happen on the following Monday made some people even more nervous about the earthquake.
I was scared because it was the only moment it happened and that the solar eclipse was on Monday, which made it more scary,’’ Ms. Ramnarine explained.
For some people, this was not their first earthquake. Marco Pompa, the ninth grade global history teacher, experienced his first earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 in August 2011. Back then, he didn’t know what was going on. This time he did: “I freaked out and ran to Mr. Dio’s classroom,’’ he said.
