Adam Schwenzfeier, an algebra teacher, hosts a pickleball club every Wednesday and Thursday from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m.
He is very passionate about this sport, and he enjoys teaching other students how to play and seeing them become just as passionate as he is about his hobby.
Many kids as well as him “can blow steam off after a long day at school,” he says. “It helps students socialize outside of classrooms. Overall, it gives students a greater opportunity to play with each other, and just have fun.”
Mr. Schwenzfeier says that the sport is “really easy to learn and hard to master.”
“You can learn the rules and have competitive games on your first day,” he said. ” But even if you’ve played for 10 years, there’s always more to learn.” The rules can vary, and even cause tension between teams, but that’s the joy in pickleball.
Junior Jabdiel Alicea looks forward to the club each week because it’s fun and makes him happy. “I play just to play,” he said. “I like to play with my favorite students and teams.”
Another junior, Carlos Acosta, plays “because it’s different and interesting” from any sport he’s played. He mostly plays soccer, so pickleball was something new for him to try and enjoy.
Brandon Ford enjoys playing pickleball “so I can hit and spike the ball.” He mostly plays because he enjoys the tournaments he sees online.
On Feb. 16, students will have a chance to show off their skills in a Student vs. Staff Pickleball Tournament. There will be four consecutive games for the pickleball tournament, which is an eight team single eliminatation.
The students are determined and confident that this time they will finally have a win against the staff.
