My trip to attend a national journalism conference in Boston proved to be an interesting experience.
Sleeping like a baby on the long train ride from New York was a blessing. I needed that rest to keep up with the group on the four-day trip. However, the last day hit me hard — I got really sick. It was frustrating, especially when I was looking forward to going back home. I tried my best to persevere through it, but it definitely ended the trip on a sour note.
On the brighter side, meeting new people from other states and Washington, D.C., was fun. Building connections with fellow journalists was so informational and eye-opening. We shared stories and experiences, and bonded over our shared love for journalism.
Then the conferences, which started at 8 a.m. and ran till 4 p.m., were amazing. They were informational, one after another. But during my packed schedule, there were moments that stood out as long discussions and unexpected stories emerged.
I also interviewed a student who attended the meeting.
Senior Trevor Butler from Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish, Washington, has been involved in journalism all four years of high school. “I love journalism and plan on majoring in it for college.”
He was still going strong on the third day of the convention. “I had lots of fun and will be going to the museum later. Today I went to five meetings and took one 45-minute break.”
He focuses on the sports media side of journalism and his work can be found at alltheedge.com.
Overall, it was a trip filled with ups and downs. The illness was a bummer, but the relationships and knowledge were undeniably worth it. Being part of the school newspaper gives me a chance to express myself in different ways, and the conference gave me an amazing opportunity.
