Bronx River is adamant about reaching attendance milestones and as an award, students who reached 90 percent or above attendance this fall, were invited to a Silent Disco Dance. At the silent disco, students wore headphones that lit up and had three channels (two for music and one for no music.) A professional DJ controlled the music channels. The dance also included a photo booth and snacks.
On the brighter side, for students who were not eligible for this dance, during marking period 3, students with 90 percent or above are eligible for a Six Flags trip in December and another Silent Disco is being planned next semester.
“Attendance matters because showing up is more then half the battle to your success,” says Tene Kelly, the assistant principal who organized the event. “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take; you can’t learn the lesson if you don’t show up.”
Tenth grade student Jomayra Amparo attended the dance with her friends, Sebastian Perez, Myess Hammouri and Gabbriella Amparo. “Without the headphones it looked silly but they had a lot of snacks,” she said. “It was a lot of fun because they brought a rotating camera.”
“They played a lot of drill music and random songs but Myess enjoyed it,” she added.
Sabrina Alkayfee’s advisory came up with the concept of having a Silent Disco dance.
