Four seniors leave school early each day to take part in Coop Tech, a program that teaches indroductory skills in a variety of careers, including automotive sevices, health services and information technolgoy.
Shavon Evelyn, the senior guidance counselor, explained the advantages of Coop Tech. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to gain experience in your field of interest,” she siad. “It’s also free and you get certified for most of the programs. I wish they had more seats because there are many other kids eager for a position.”
Four BRHS seniors: Briana Hutchinson, William Lappe, Alexandra Lee, and Taniya Freeman, are currently enrolled in Coop tech.
William, who is studying nursing, said he is learning,”how to be a CNA, doing certified nursing classwork and hands on work with mannequins.”
He added, “We also do treatment, clinical, patient needs, and nursing experience. I get along with my peers in Coop Tech. Most of the peers in my class are female.”
William goes to 96th street for his classes.
Briana, Alexandra, and Taniya are learning about cosmetology, specifically hair styling.
“The classes are cool and we are learning how to do two-strand twists and adding hair to twists,” Briana said.
Taniya added, “We are also flat ironing hair.”
Alexandra said, “We could use these skills in the future to hustle with a side job as a hair stylist.”
They all go to Longwood for their classes.
