Pros and cons of social media: Students share their views

Kayla Guerin
Social media impacts us in many different ways. We use it to talk to people and to communicate with different people with different backgrounds. Also, we use it to make money, get sponsorships and even to get famous. The positive side of social media is that you can make a name for yourself. You can become an influencer and an entrepreneur. Another thing is you can bring awareness to the public. For example, if any injustice is happening, like police brutality, child abuse, hate crimes, domestic violence and racism, social media can spread the info like wildfire.  Thanks to social media, problems that have been kept in the dark so long often come to light.

But on the flip side, some people that do talk about those things don’t really care about those things. Some people profit off of it and use it as a trend that everyone follows along. Not everyone has good intensions. Also, anyone can hack your social media and mess with your accounts.

Cyber bulling is also common, especially with underage kids and has sometimes led to suicide. People have access to stalk you, track you and even find out where you live. Especially in dating apps or other social media, such as Instagram, predators are always online, looking for potential victims, which unfortunately, often are minors.
And lastly, there’s the problem of Catfishing: You can create a fake profile on a dating app or any other social media and create a fake persona to deceive people out of their money, to exploit people and to even harass them.

Social media has man pros and cons: It’s just wise to be careful with what you put online and who you talk to.

I use social media everyday and spend at least 6 hours a day on it. It’s hard to believe that social media wasn’t a thing 30 years ago. I can honestly admit that social media has become both a blessing and a curse in today’s society.

Social media is always available. which makes it addictive. It can also be very harmful to one’s mental health due to the fact that people only share the good things about their lives;  this could potentially make people start to compare their lives to others. Social media also normalizes toxic traits, risk-taking behaviors and bullying.

However, there are also many benefits to using social media. It is a quick and easy way to stay in touch with your loved ones. It can also be a way, if you’re thinking about starting a business, to promote your brand and spread awareness. Lastly, it can be a great research tool.

Many people often label social media as harmful and unsafe but honestly, social media is what you make out of it.

The benefits of social media, in my opinion, are the ability to form relationships. Social media is significantly more than just connecting companies with their customers. They are about meeting new friends, reconnecting with family, and discovering new things. It’s also about sharing your knowledge. Social media allows you to discuss what you know and what you want to be recognized for. You get to know people a lot better and faster, especially if you use social media for business. When you know your audience better, you can provide them with more valuable material. Whatever sector you are in, social media allows you to create your brand as a thought leader, the go-to source for knowledge on matters pertaining to your area.

However, Social media usage, may have a detrimental impact on youth by distracting them, interrupting their sleep, and exposing them to unrealistic views of other people’s lives and peer pressure. The dangers might be linked to how much social media kids use. It is dangerous because it intrudes on your privacy in unprecedented ways. Children are becoming a target for pedophiles and hackers as a result of their oversharing on social media. It also leads to cyberbullying, which has a huge impact on everyone. As a result, posting on social media, particularly by minors, must be supervised at all times. Another harmful impact that social media has on many people is underage and other poor behavior like inadequacy about your life or looks, as well as a fear of missing out that might keep you coming to social media
